Higher Education Specialists and Researchers

Alan Ralphs is an education specialist and researcher at the University of the Western Cape with a focus on the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). He holds B.Com degree and a Masters in Education from Wits University and has an extensive track record in formal teaching and adult education. His career began as a high school teacher on the Cape flats and in Lesotho after which he joined the South African Committee for Higher Education (SACHED) where he specialized in the development and implementation of non-formal education programmes for trade unions and community-based organisations. He subsequently worked for the Catholic Institute of Education and the Joint Education Trust, specializing from 1998 onwards in a range of RPL related policy and pilot project activities, most notably in higher education and in the manufacturing sector.

In 2002 he joined the Division for Lifelong Learning at UWC where he continued to specialize in RPL related policy, provision and research work. He currently runs the Portfolio Development Course at UWC and has been involved in RPL related research since 2006. He recently headed up a national study on RPL and is one of the authors and co-editor of the book ‘RPL as Specialised Pedagogy: Crossing the Lines (HSRC Press, 2016). He was also a member of the National Advisory Committee that worked with SAQA in putting its most recent RPL policy (2013) together.
